Classroom Updates Week of February 2-6 Reading: We'll finish our poetry unit this week, but of course we'll continue to read poetry throughout the rest of the year. The kiddos are getting better at analyzing poems and making inferences. We have read a wide variety of poems-some that have layers of meaning. Throughout the week I'll sprinkle in more poetry as we slowly shift our focus to literary nonfiction, (that means biographies and autobiographies). We'll read about some inspiring people that were passionate and worked hard to accomplish their dreams. I'll have students think of their own passions and notice how reading to learn and working hard lead to success. Writing: Last week the students wrote some amazing earth related poems. I was so proud of their hard work and the message they weaved into their poems. This week we'll write more poems and work on grammar. Also, we'll start reading some question/answer books to gain an understanding about this text structure in preparation of a class book we are going to write. Science: I bet everyone heard about our cool volcanoes. It was so much fun creating volcanoes and watching them erupt. All of the students were engaged, excited, and thinking like scientist. There was great collaboration going on as well. I'll upload photos to the website soon. Our focus this week will be on slow changes to the earth, specifically weathering and erosion. We have two investigations to conduct and then we will begin observing our soil as we segue into a unit on soil formation. Math: We've started another unit on multiplication and division. During this unit students will learn strategies for the 9 facts, strategies for division, and how to multiply by zero and one. This unit also includes graphing, (as it relates to multiplication), and multiplication/division in tables. Upcoming Events February 4- Early Release February 10- Individual and Class Pictures February 13- Valentines Day Party February 13- Spirit Assembly (students should drop off their backpack in the classroom) February 16- Student Holiday Highlights from Last WeekStudents had a great time building and erupting volcanoes! We partnered up with Mrs. Lipe's class and headed outdoors for our investigation. I was so impressed with how cooperative each group worked and how they collaborated to determine the best way to build their volcano from natural resources. Once the volcanoes were built, students poured baking soda and vinegar to simulate a volcanic eruption. We noticed our "lava" spewed out quickly and flowed down the volcano quickly. Our young scientists recorded their observations and discussed how this is similar to a real volcano. So much fun! This week we finished our unit on fractions. We reviewed by rotating through fraction stations and solving fraction problems. Students also used the smart board to practice fractions on a number line, (too bad I didn't get a picture of that).
