Good-bye Ladybugs After watching our ladybug larve transform into ladybugs, it was time to set them free. The kiddos thought the garden would be the perfect place. We were sad to see them go. Solving Math Problems Guest Speaker from Keep Austin Fed We were lucky to hear about food waste from Ms. Potral's friend that works at Keep Austin Fed. We learned about how much food is wasted, why that is bad for the environment, and what we can do to help. Also, we discovered that there are sooo many people that don't have enough food. Our Favorite Animal Visitor (known as Flash to some of the kiddos) It was time to say good-bye to our animal friends. The red eared slider was so interesting to watch and everyone really wanted to hold him. So, I decided it would be a good photo opportunity and let anyone that wanted to hold our friend. They all look so cute! Reviewing Fractions Subtraction Game Reviewing for Math STAAR with Problem Solving Task Cards Presenting Book Reviews Some of our groups from the previous book clubs used their posters to give a quick book review. Coming Up Week of May 15-19STAAR is now behind us and the end of the year is approaching quickly. We have some special events coming up like Field Day and the end of the year parties, but we aren't finished learning. Actually, we still have a lot to do! This week we have a very busy schedule as we start new book clubs, begin our last science unit, start persuasive letters, and finish out math working on standard algorithms and problem solving. See below for some details about our learning.
Writing: This week, we'll listen to several persuasive texts and notice persuasive techniques. We'll learn to state our opinion and provide reasons and supporting details to persuade the reader to think or do something. After writing a few short persuasive texts, students will begin writing a persuasive letter related to our PBL. Reading: Last week students chose new book club books and are very excited to get started. During this last round, we'll work on problem solving while reading in order to understand the text at a deeper reading. This will include lessons on synthesizing and noticing details/clues that the author provides for figuring out implicitly conveyed information. Additionally, we read a few short persuasive texts. Math: Our focus will be on using the standard algorithm to add and subtract and applying our learning to problem solving. We'll also play games that involve addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Science: We are finishing our unit on life cycles and will then begin our final unit on the solar system. After observing our own ladybugs and our tadpoles along with reading, watching video clips, and using interactive websites about animal life cycles, students have a good grasp on how ladybugs, frogs, and other animals grow and change. Now we are observing and comparing plant life cycles and plan to finish life cycles on Tuesday. Social Studies: Last week we learned how schools have changed over time and we compared schools in the past with present day schools. This week, we'll read about how communities change and how inventions, communication, and transportation have changed. Upcoming Events Thursday May 18: Spotlight Night Wednesday & Thursday May 17-18: Book Fair
