Hope you had a wonderful holiday! It was so nice to have some relaxing, fun time with my family. I was thinking about everything I am thankful for over the break, and one of them is being a teacher at Elsa England and having a career that I enjoy so much. I am thankful for being able to spend my days with your children. Can't wait to see them tomorrow morning!
Here's what we are learning this week... Science: We'll continue to develop an understanding about the importance of conserving natural resources. Also, we'll learn about mixtures; what they are and how they can be separated based on physical properties of matter. Reading: This week students will prepare for our first reading benchmark which will take place later in the week. Students will complete their second practice passage, (we did one before the break), and we'll learn some test taking strategies and vocabulary. Additionally, students will read and respond to nonfiction texts and learn how to use context clues. Writing: Students will conduct research for our PBL project. The focus will be on recycling and plastic waste as students search for information about the affects of plastic on the environment, problems associated with plastic use, and solutions to the problem. Math: We'll continue to solve multiplication problems using various strategies as well as play games to develop fact fluency. Another focus will be on modeling division using pictorial representations, arrays, equal groups, and jumps on a number line. Upcoming Events: Wednesday, December 3- Early Release Thursday, December 18- 3rd Grade Winter Party

This week is International Children's week! Tomorrow morning is the kickoff assembly! Last week our class sponsor, Mrs. Huffor, taught us all about Germany. We learned some of the German language, some popular attractions, a little history, some interesting facts about their school life, and much more. Some students added to their research during her presentation. Speaking of research, we have completed our research on Germany and each student created a presentation page using Google drawings. The kiddos did a great job, especially since this was the first time many of them have used Goggle drawing. These will be displayed in the 3rd grade hallway-they look great! Here's what is happening in our class this week. Week of November 17-21 Reading: Students will read lots of nonfiction this week as we dive into our PBL research. I'll model strategies readers use to understand informational texts including activating prior knowledge, reading with a question in mind, and determining importance. Writing: Students will begin taking notefacts for our PBL research on recycling and plastic waste. We will read some books together to practice taking notes, and then on Thursday students will research with their inquiry group. Science: We didn't get to complete our investigation on decomposing trash on Friday since we didn't have enough soil, so we'll finish on Tuesday. Each group will create a mini landfill in a milk jug and bury a piece of trash. This will be an ongoing investigation since the students will need to frequently dig up their trash to look for evidence of decomposition. Also this week, we'll continue to learn about natural resources and why it's important to conserve. Math: More multiplication! Our focus will continue to be on the 2s, 4s, and 8s facts as well as strategies for solving multiplication problems. Last week we explored the relationship between the 2s, 4s, and 8s, and almost everyone noticed how you can use doubling to determine facts. Upcoming Events: Wednesday-Friday Scholastic Book Fair in the Library Thursday, November 20- International Children's Fair at 6:00 Friday, November 21- International Children's Fair rotations (students will get a "passport" and visit different countries represented around the school Highlights from Last Week |
