Exploragons! Coming Up Week of 17-21It was great to see so many parents join us for our Planet Protector presentation. The performance was fabulous! I am so proud of all the kiddos for working hard and being passionate about raising awareness about the global trash problem. If you weren't able to attend, you can see it on video. Mr. Weiler set up a camera and recorded the whole presentation. See link below.
Plant Protector presentation https://youtu.be/S3qKDNtVla0 There was a lot of work that went into our presentation. Students worked in their E-slot groups for several weeks writing skits, creating trash art, writing chants, making things out of trash, and creating posters. Then we had to put all of the ideas together. The skit groups combined ideas and created the final skits, the bucket band learned how to drum along with their chants, and there was even a group that made props for the skits. Also, each class wrote information for a few slides and wrote tips to share. It was truly a group effort from all students. The final step was practice. Last week we practiced every day at least once with the whole grade level, (the kids in the skit practiced even more). So, I appreciate the willingness of the kiddos to sit and wait, participate, listen, and sit and wait some more. In the end, it was all worth it! Now that our presentation is over, we need to get down to some serious work. We have three weeks until STAAR so will spend lots of time preparing and reviewing. See below for details about the upcoming week. Writing: We didn't have time last week to work on our personal narratives, so this week students will choose a seed idea, plan their story, write their draft, and revise and edit their draft. This will be for a grade since it is considered a district unit assessment. If time, we'll also begin writing poems for Earth Day. Reading: Our book clubs are still wrapping up. We are reading the final chapters of our books. During the last book club meetings, students will discuss the characters and plot and create a poster about their character. Also, we will be working on reading passages and reviewing concepts as needed. Math: Our focus will be on place value of larger numbers. Students will gain an understanding of the relationship found in the base-10 value system and be able to describe that relationship. Also, students will compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 as well as compare numbers. We'll practice using expanded notation and representing numbers on a number line, too. Science: This week we'll learn how stuctures and functions of plants and animals allow them to survive in particular environments. We'll observe cacti and flowers to determine the function of each part and then notice how those parts are alike and different. Since Earth Day is Saturday, we'll also participate in a few Earth Day activities. Upcoming Events Thursday April 20: Cub Choir Spring Concert @ 6:30 Friday April 21: Assembly for Choir Concert @ 7:45 Monday April 24: Volunteer Appreciation Program Assembly @ 7:45 in the cafeteria Noticing and Wondering in Math-Partial Products Area Model Multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit Multiplication Using Base Ten Blocks to Model Guest Speaker from Round Rock Honey STEM DAY Challenge...Build the highest structure with spaghetti and marshmallows. This session was hosted by McNeil High School Stem Another Stem Challenge...Build a structure that can support a tennis ball Coming Up Week of April 10-14It sounds like everything went well Thursday and Friday with the substitute. I really enjoyed the math conference I attended. Can you believe I spent 2 1/2 days learning and thinking about math? It's true-even during dinner. The great thing about being gone for professional development is I come back feeling refreshed and ready to try out some new ideas. The bad thing...getting behind. I am behind on grading but I'll get caught up in the next few days.
We will have a busy four day week coming up as we prepare for our Planet Protector assembly. See below for a glimpse of our week: Writing: This week we'll choose a personal narrative to revise and edit. Students will add a lead that grabs the reader, sensory images, dialogue, emotions/thinking, details that paint a picture, vivid verbs/specific nouns, and a satisfying ending that wraps up the piece. Reading: We'll have one more book club meeting this week before we start reading the last 3-4 chapters. We'll focus on character change, theme, and making inferences. Groups will discuss how their character is changing and make predictions about how the main character will resolve their conflict. They will also discuss the influence other characters and events have had on the main character. Math: This week, we'll continue to use strategies to solve problems involving 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication. We'll wrap up the unit by learning the standard algorithm for 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication. There isn't a district unit assessment for this unit alone-it will be combined with the next unit on place value. Science: Due to practicing for the assembly, we will only have a short time for science this week. We'll start learning about plant and animal adaptations. Upcoming Events Thursday April 13: Planet Protector presentation at 8:00 for the school and at 1:30 for parents Friday April 14: No school Somehow I managed to go all week without taking any pictures! So, I'll give you a few highlights without photos. I guess I need to make up for it this week, however I'll be out Thursday and Friday. Thinglinks-Ecosystems Our ecosystem interactive webpages are complete, (or should be). We actually finished them last week, but I didn't think to post them. Here are links those that are finished and include accurate information. I will post more when they are complete. If you don't see your child's work, they can complete their Thinklink at home. Most of the kiddos just have to make a few final adjustments and editing and then they will be ready for broadcast. Mr. Weiler will visit our classroom next week to show us how to make a voice over. Powtoons isn't super user friendly, so I am proud of the perseverance the kiddos have shown while creating an effective PSA. I can't wait to see these on broadcast. I'll post links when they are finished. Coming Up Week of April 3-7
