The first few pictures below are actually from earlier in the year when we had Kona Ice. I realized they weren't posted so I am sharing them now. The rest are from our presentation to the school and parents. I am so proud of how hard every worked to make our presentation informative yet interesting. I think they did a great job planning, creating, and writing the scripts/information.

I can't believe it is almost May! Where has the year gone? Staar testing is in two weeks, which means it is time for lots of review. The next two weeks we will focus on reviewing reading and math concepts. Some of our review will consist of completing passages and solving math story problems, but we'll also add in some games and other fun activities to make review a bit more interesting. See below for our plans for the week.
Writing: Last week we started PBL/earth poems, (which are amazing), that we will finish this week. We'll revise our poems and add graphics. We'll also work on some grammar skills this week. Part of our writing time will be used for reading review. Reading: STAAR review! Monday we will complete a practice Staar test so I can determine which concepts we need to focus on the most during our review time. Also, this will help build students' stamina. We'll spend time reviewing word meanings, using a dictionary entry, and using context clues. Students will play a context clues Scoot game and an inferencing Scoot game. Math: In addition to reviewing math concepts, we'll work on customary and metric units of weight and capacity. Science: We'll observe plants this week, including cacti and a flowering plant which we'll compare. One day we will take our learning outside to observe plants around our school. Students will look for adaptations the plants make to survive and notice their stuctures and functions. Upcoming Events Tuesday, April 26th @ 8:00 am-Wildlife Warriors Presentation for parent Thursday, May 5th-Spring Choir Concert (6:30-7:30p) Friday, May 6th-School Spirit Assembly @ 7:45am STAAR Testing for 3rd grade-May 9th and 10th Guest Speaker Chris Walsh told us all about Brushy Creek Trail including stories from history, wildlife that has inhabited the area over time, and the impact of environmental factors and humans on the trail. Multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit numbers
Here is our latest addition-a leopard tadpole! He arrived on Thursday, so we will have the pleasure of watching him grow and change. We also have ladybug larvae in a habitat case. They have been here over a week and are growing sooo quickly. I think we may have some pupas soon. As our animal friends grow, we'll compare their life cycles and discuss the structures and functions they have at each stage of the process. Playing a game for Financial Literacy Learning! We know all about credit and cash now! Working on our PBL informational pieces. We are revising and editing as well as adding visuals for the reader. I can't wait to see the final products-they have worked so hard. I'll be posting theses on our PBL blog so you'll have a chance to view our hard work, (and hopefully learn something too). Here is a glimpse of our week for April 11-15...
Writing: Students have worked so hard on their PBL informational pieces. They have a little bit of revising and editing left and then we'll be ready to publish them on our PBL website. I can't wait to share them-you will be impressed! This week students will write letters from the point of view of an endangered animal, earth, or a tree to celebrate Earth Day, (the kiddos want to have Earth month, so we are starting early). Reading: Our book clubs are off to a great start. Each group has had two meetings now and are setting their reading goals. We still need to practice going deeper during our discussions, but we are getting there. Our focus so far has been on analyzing the character and noticing how the character drives the plot. This week we'll also identify and discuss cause and effect. Of course, we'll continue to work on passages in preparation for STAAR. Math: We started a new unit on applying multiplication strategies to 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication. Students will learn how to use known facts to determine multiples of 10, break apart an array to find factors, use doubling/halving, and use the associative & distributive properties. As always, we'll begin with conceptual understanding through the use of various math tools such as tiles and base 10 blocks. Science: I hope you have heard about our newest arrivals-ladybug larvae and a leopard tadpole. We have been observing the larvae for a week now and are amazed at how quickly they grow. Our tadpole arrived last Thursday and we already see the resemblance of a frog. We'll compare & contrast the life cyles of frogs and ladybugs and discuss their functions during each stage of their cycle. Also, this week we'll begin learning about plant adaptations.
