Here is our latest addition-a leopard tadpole! He arrived on Thursday, so we will have the pleasure of watching him grow and change. We also have ladybug larvae in a habitat case. They have been here over a week and are growing sooo quickly. I think we may have some pupas soon. As our animal friends grow, we'll compare their life cycles and discuss the structures and functions they have at each stage of the process. Playing a game for Financial Literacy Learning! We know all about credit and cash now! Working on our PBL informational pieces. We are revising and editing as well as adding visuals for the reader. I can't wait to see the final products-they have worked so hard. I'll be posting theses on our PBL blog so you'll have a chance to view our hard work, (and hopefully learn something too). Here is a glimpse of our week for April 11-15...
Writing: Students have worked so hard on their PBL informational pieces. They have a little bit of revising and editing left and then we'll be ready to publish them on our PBL website. I can't wait to share them-you will be impressed! This week students will write letters from the point of view of an endangered animal, earth, or a tree to celebrate Earth Day, (the kiddos want to have Earth month, so we are starting early). Reading: Our book clubs are off to a great start. Each group has had two meetings now and are setting their reading goals. We still need to practice going deeper during our discussions, but we are getting there. Our focus so far has been on analyzing the character and noticing how the character drives the plot. This week we'll also identify and discuss cause and effect. Of course, we'll continue to work on passages in preparation for STAAR. Math: We started a new unit on applying multiplication strategies to 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication. Students will learn how to use known facts to determine multiples of 10, break apart an array to find factors, use doubling/halving, and use the associative & distributive properties. As always, we'll begin with conceptual understanding through the use of various math tools such as tiles and base 10 blocks. Science: I hope you have heard about our newest arrivals-ladybug larvae and a leopard tadpole. We have been observing the larvae for a week now and are amazed at how quickly they grow. Our tadpole arrived last Thursday and we already see the resemblance of a frog. We'll compare & contrast the life cyles of frogs and ladybugs and discuss their functions during each stage of their cycle. Also, this week we'll begin learning about plant adaptations.
